Encuentro Linux 2010: Gracias a todos!

Y ya se nos fue. Este año, el evento Linux más importante de Chile tuvo lugar en Concepción, específicamente en la Universidad del Bio-Bio. Durante dos días se vivió un excelente tiempo donde compartimos diferentes vivencias con amigos, nuevos amigos, conocidos, colegas, etc., todos hablando un mismo idioma.

Muy notable fue que se realizara por primera vez el KDE Day, pudiendo contar con la presencia del desarrollador KDE Helio Chissini de Castro. Aunque mi intención inicial siempre fue participar de ese día, no pude y tuve que regresar a Santiago para el sábado

Muchas  gracias a los Organizadores, por el trato cordial y por haber hecho realidad mi sueño de exponer en tan importante instancia, a Carlos Rios (crosvera) siempre tan cordial y preocupado por hacernos las cosas más fáciles a todos, a las Empresas que auspiciaron y estuvieron participando, a la U. del Bio-Bio, a Novell por su apoyo al enviar discos de openSUSE 11.3 + poleras, lamentablemente no llegaron a tiempo, buena cosa es que pude recurrir a un antiguo stock de la 11.2 con alrededor de 50 stickers sobrantes de entonces, a la Comunidad KDE Chile, de la cual soy miembro, a todos los que creyeron en hacer realidad este encuentro y por supuesto a quienes asistieron a mi presentación acerca de PySide! Gracias por haber esperado el cambio de horario

También las gracias a Camilo Astete por la polera KDE-cl.

Sin importar si es en Santiago o Punta Arenas, espero verlos en el próximo Encuentro Linux, una experiencia inolvidable.

System services administration with YaST2.

This is a short tip for every new user of openSUSE out there.

Most major distros install and enable default services, such as CUPS, joystick, Cron, Network, and so on. But in the end, if you just do not need it, why keep it enabled? So I will show you how to disable services in openSUSE via the powerful YaST2 interface.

YaST is the installation and configuration tool for openSUSE, SUSE Linux Enterprise and the former SuSE Linux distributions. It is popular for its easy use and attractive graphical interface and the capability to customize your system quickly during and after the installation.

Run YaST, the Control Center, and click System>System Services (Runlevel).

Then, the System Services dialog opens up. There you can choose to use the Simple or Expert mode. I will go with the Expert one, and for this tip, I would like to stop and disable the CUPS service as I do not have a printer and it is no use to have it running.

To the very left-bottom corner there is a Start/Stop/Refresh button. Click it to see the following drop down element appear.

OK, I want to stop it now, so click that option, and I am informed about the new status for the CUPS service.

After checking that CUPS is no longer running, I need to disable it so it does not start automatically on startup. Check and click the Set/Reset button on the dialog’s  button, choose Disable the service.

Click OK and Yes to save the changes. Again, fast and easy with powerful YaST2.

Configuring Dolphin’s Toolbar is just easy

One very known fact about KDE is its highly customizable environment. This time, I will show you how to add, remove, and change positions for Dolphin’s Toolbar.

Dolphin is KDE’s default file browser focusing on usability.  It’s main features are:

• Navigation bar for URLs, which allows to navigate quickly through the file hierarchy
• View properties are remembered for each folder
• Split of views is supported
• Network transparency
• Undo functionality
• Renaming of a variable number of selected items in one step

The default Dolphin looks like this:

I might say it’s very simple and useful compared to Gnome’s Nautilus. The times I have used Nautilus I have never been able to find the short way to remove some of its buttons so that gives Dolphin a cool advantage over the old Gnome file browser.

In order to modify the Toolbar, click Settings / Configure Toolbars. You will be presented the following dialog which is very clear. To the left every available actions and to the right every current action. You just use the arrows in between to move the buttons as desired.

In this case, I wanted to add the Open Terminal action, so inserted one separator and then looked up for Open Terminal in the list. Since I am not used to use Details and Columns actions, I just removed them from the current actions list, and also got rid of icons because that would be the default view.

Finally my customized Dolphin becomes this:

No flash (Adobe) plugin sound in openSUSE 11.2 (KDE)

I don’t know why, but this has happened to me more than once after installing the KDE version of openSUSE 11.2.

In order to make it work, I just open YaST as root, of course, and look up for the Sound seccion under Hardware. Once there, select the audio card and click the “Other” button (bottom right corner) and choose “Volume…” Modify PCM and there you go.

openSUSE 11.2 ha salido!

El release de openSUSE 11.2, ocurrido en el día de hoy, incluye nuevas versiones de GNOME, KDE, OpenOffice.org, Firefox, kernel Linux, y muchas actualizaciones más.

En esta ocasión, podrán encontrar más de 1000 aplicaciones de escritorio open source. openSUSE también incluye una completa suite de software para servidores y una rica selección de herramientas de desarrollo open source.

Algunas de las características mas interesantes en openSUSE 11.2 son:

Escritorios.

Como siempre, openSUSE proporciona todo lo que necesitas para iniciarte con Linux en el escritorio.

openSUSE 11.2 incluye KDE 4.3 como su escritorio “predeterminado”. Si lo instalas desde el DVD si cambiar preferencia alguna, tendrás el escritorio KDE por omisión.
Sin embargo, todavía proporcionamos GNOME de igual manera, y Xfce y otros gestores de ventana como escritorios alternativos también!.

KDE 4.3 representa una actualización mayor en la plataforma KDE. Incluye soporte para redes mejorado, y logra integrar Firefox y OpenOffice.org de una forma mejor al ambiente de KDE. El proyecto openSUSE trabajó cercanamente con el proyecto KDE en los ámbitos de temas y posicionamiento para entregar una apariencia que represente a ambos proyectos de buena manera.

De igual manera, encontrarás la grandeza de GNOME en su versión 2.28 en openSUSE 11.2, el último lanzamiento de este escritorio, el cual incluye un tema completamente nuevo (Sonar), la aplicación para la actualización de software mejorada, avances en la aplicación para el video y Webcam de GNOME, y muchas otros avances y mejoras para preparar la plataforma GNOME para GNOME 3.0 en el 2010.

OpenOffice.org 3.1 es una suite de ofimática compatible con Microsoft Office. Este lanzamiento incluye mejoras en el seguimiento de cambios y colaboración en Writer, y mejoras en la aplicación para dibujos.

Las redes sociales tienen un empuje en 11.2 con la adición de los clientes para microbligging en GNOME y KDE, los que ayudan a conectarte con los sitios de redes sociales mas populares. Estos clientes son Gwibber y Choqok, respectivamente.

Con openSUSE 11.2, tienes la capacidad de instalar el medio live de GNOME o KDE desde un USB, y numerosas mejoras para hacer que openSUSE 11.2 funcione mucho mejor en netbooks.

Bajo la lupa.

Las mejoras en el escritorio son mayormente visibles, pero pasa bastante bajo la lupa, también como en openSUSE 11.2.

Mejoras en el almacenamiento incluyen la capacidad de cifrar el disco duro completo, para los usuarios preocupados de la seguridad de sus datos. Los usuarios pueden también tomar ventaja de la generación siguiente de sistemas de archivos para Linux, con Ext4 o btrfs. ¿Deseas administrar servidores openSUSE remotamente en una interfaz Web? El día llegará pronto! Los usuarios de openSUSE 11.2 pueden instalar el preestreno de WebYaST: una herramienta para la administración remota basada en la Web para sistemas openSUSE.

Linux para la Educación.

El Build Service de openSUSE proporciona miles de aplicaciones en la forma de paquetes “1-click” para elevar tu experiencia con openSUSE 11.2. La comunidad openSUSE Education entrega cientos de aplicaciones educativas que se ajustan a estudiantes de todas las edades, padres, profesores y administradores de TI pertenecientes a instituciones educacionales mediante el Build Service.

El lanzamiento de openSUSE 11.2 será seguido cercanamente por un derivado muy especial, Li-f-e: Linux for Education. Li-f-e contiene GNOME, KDE, y también el galardonado ambiente de aprendizaje para niños Sugar. Con paquetes del repositorio Packman, Li-f-e entrega todo lo necesario para obtener una experiencia multimedia enriquecida también.

openSUSE está disponible para la descarga imediata! Tienes varias opciones de instalación:

• openSUSE 11.2 DVD instalable de 32-bit.
• openSUSE 11.2 DVD instalable de 64-bit
• openSUSE 11.2 GNOME 32-bit Live CD.
• openSUSE 11.2 GNOME 64-bit Live CD.
• openSUSE 11.2 KDE 32-bit Live CD.
• penSUSE 11.2 KDE 64-bit Live CD.
• Iniciar openSUSE 11.2 desde una unidad USB*.

*descarga uno de los Live CDs disponibles arriba y cópialo a la unidad USB con el siguiente comando: dd if=image.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M.

Reemplaza “image.iso” con el nombre de la imagen ISO descargada, y cambia “sdX” con la unidad actual de tu USB. Ten cuidado! Esto borrará la unidad de destino, por lo que debes asegurarte de especificar el nombre de la unidad correcto y respaldar todo lo que consideres importante.

Right now it feels that my notebook runs faster with it. I have read there are some issues with plasmoids, but I only use a few of them so I am not aware of those issues, which are always welcome to be reported at the bugzilla system.

Changing computer name (openSUSE 11.1)

It seems to me openSUSE gives your computer a random name. So how to change it?.

Simple, via terminal create a new Kate session and then edit the file /etc/HOSTNAME. There you should find something like this:

RandomComputerName.site

All you need to do is replace RandomComputerName with the desired name for your machine. Of course change is not made right away so you better restart or logout in order to see the change.

openSUSE 11 KDE 4.1 tip: faster graphics

Having an old ATI Radeon 7200 is not much fun, but for the price is good.

I installed KDE 4.1 on the T42 and after updating everything it felt so damn slow, just because of the desktop’s theme (at least what I noticed after trying all of them). So searching the web, I found a great fix for this in the openSUSE website:

1- Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
2- Right there, blacklist the ‘fglrx’ driver.

Kbabel is good!

It’s been a great time since I joined the openSUSE translation (es) team. The guys have been so nice teaching me how it all works out and I can say I’m absolutely proud of being a member of this team. By the way, we are using the Verbum V2G.

To begin, days ago I chose to try the new KDE 4.1, just because of its advanced features, and today I can tell the difference. Although it takes a short time to get used to the system’s management procedures, no big problems I have found on my way. Even after screwing up the main panel! =)

Since I needed a good KDE tool for translations (and kate didn’t do), I installed Kbabel, a tool for editing and managing .po files.

So if you are thinking about joining a translation team, install Kbabel without thinking it twice.

k3b for burning music CDs from mp3 files

It’s my first time using k3b to burn music Cds from mp3 files. They are for my sweet daughter Antonia so it’s worth at all.

The task started out with the downloading of a few mp3 files from a website I can’t remember (I’d ask my gfriend but she’s not here right now) and it was no damn surprise they were compressed in a .zip file, so I found out Ark didn’t do with the GUI, or I didn’t take the time to set it up and didn’t care to read documentation on it. Then I downloaded unzip so from the command line I can have all of the required files uncompressed. That was cool since I never had done that before =) and as soon as I was done typing they were out waiting to be added to my music CD project. Almost there when another thing happened…no codecs for mp3 files support! No big deal, just did an install of k3b-codecs via YaST2. It asked me for some depedencies, I chose just to ignore them this time.

Now we have k3b working for all of our musical needs =)
