Goodbye Facebook!

Filed under: Society — ricardovs @ 12:08 am

Taht is damn right! Today I closed (disabled, in the right word) my Facebook account. Reasons? I find it useless so why keep something useless around? Nowadays I put my life in Twitter as a Social Network and that is all I need.

IF you need to find me, for some strange reason or not, my Twitte account is @ricardovs. And what’s more, I even keep a blog at wordpress, which would be http//ricardovs.wordpress.com. And I will keep on being an enthusiastic member of openSUSE ;)

Changes…

Filed under: Events, Family (tree), GNOME, KDE, Society, openSUSE — ricardovs @ 3:00 am

Right against the grain. I will no longer stay in Santiago de Chile for a job. Last Friday it was my last day at Movidreams S.A., sorry I could not say goodbye to everyone in person. These were fun three months, a lot went on in that time period and now I would like to openly thank Andres Valenzuela O., Fernando Flores B., Rene Toro Quezada, three of the most talented people I’ve ever met and worked with. You made every day a great day at the office. Of course big thanks to Humberto Lobos and Federico Saavedra, for the true oportunity to join Movidreams. Your knowledge and passion is awesome.

Now there are a couple months left in this crappy year (actually it’s not been that bad) so I’ll be traveling between Coquimbo and Vallenar very often. I need to visit Inacap for a couple reasons (sorry, not they aren’t going public at this time, heh), and also plan to meet with old friends to check if there is any job opportunity in the area. I would regret returning to Santiago right now, since I seem to be much more interested in finding a job somewhere else where life quality is better than Santiago’s. Money won’t be on the top of my list in the next 2-4 months.

Although I’ve been testing several Milestones and now the RC 2 is looking great, I will be switching to stable openSUSE 11.2 as soon as it’s out, which should be November 12th. At this point of time, KDE implementation seems to be much better than Gnome implementation. Kinda wished it was the inverse case, but that’s one of the Open Source features: you have choice. Let us wait ten more days =). I also hope to have my @opensuse.org alias once for all ;)

That’s all one changes. Have a lot of fun!.

See you at Encuentro Linux 2009

Filed under: Chile, Events, GNOME, Open source, Society, openSUSE — ricardovs @ 4:44 am

Yes, my talk over SUSE Studio got accepted for the 10th Encuentro Linux, which will be held in Valparaiso-Viña del Mar for this year(October 22-24). I’m damn happy about that.

What I plan to do is showing an overall (and hopefully deeper as well) view of the SUSE Studio Platform, how it works and how useful it is for building a given software appliance. Yes, it works for virtual appliances too but I have no experience at it :) . Of course I have a few openSUSE 11.1 DVDs to give away so no worries there.

So if you are around and feel like meeting us and discovering what Linux is about, don’t think it twice as there will be plenty of interesting talks covering topics such as Jails, Bacula, Contributing to Open Source, WebKitGTK+, Ubuntu behind the Scenes, Evolution of Linux Filesystems, Developing Gnome Applications, and much more! Remember, on Saturday it’s the Gnome Day ;)

Need more information? check out here.

We are hoping to have students, young people, professors, teachers, and professionals from many fields as well. Actually everyone is welcome to attend the event. We’ll have presentations, stands, gaming, and of course the fun install fest (openSUSE 11.1). And yes, you can have an original openSUSE 11.1 Live DVD if you are one of the first 400 people to get there ;) (Thanks Zonker!).

Where? Meet us at Universidad Andres Bello (UNAB), Campus República, República 239/Subterráneo R3. Check the map here.

Time? 10 AM though 8 PM.

Talks:

  • Rafael de la Horra, from UNAB: Education for Professionals and the Free Software Environment.
  • Enrique Herrera, from Linux Latin America: GNU/Linux, 10 years of progress.
  • Myself, openSUSE Ambassador: SUSE Studio.
  • Patricia Albornoz, SUN Campus Ambassador: Netbeans and openSUSE.

2008 is gone..review (kind of)

Filed under: Family (tree), Random thoughts, Society — ricardovs @ 9:52 pm

It’s just too late for reviews and things like that, but I’m sure some of you would like to read (in brief) about my last year.

Best thing of the year is my first daughter, Antonia. She came into this world on the last day of march, which was a surprise. Since I was working for a MS sell out enterprise at that time, and about 200 Kms away, I traveled as soon as I could to see her. Swear to me she is wonderful, and I see her as a Linux user in the near future as she enjoys so much as I play with Compiz =)

Work was fine while it lasted. Learned a lot of SQL tricks thanks to Alex Albanez, and had fun with Karen (.NET is not that bad) and Aldo (Gnexus genius) as well.   Great people and I wish I still worked with them but when you are not having fun and disagree with so many things such as wrong technology choices, and others that I am not allowed to publish (screw it anyway), the best thing to do is to move on.

Talking about Linux, I became a proud translator for the openSUSE project, and lately joined the marketing team too. Also discovered the wonders of the KDE 4 desktop environment. It feels great giving it back, and real part of the community.

Now I’m looking for a job, so I hope it’s open source related. So far vacations are going well, fun with the family, in the right place.

is money that important?

Filed under: Random thoughts, Society — Tags: , — ricardovs @ 2:47 am

Today I had a brief chat with my friend Pedro Villavicencio, and I spoke about how I feel now that I’m much more involved in the open source community, and how freaking great it feels to give it back. I mean, if I am using linux (and no longer windowns on my notebook, kind of dictator here because my girlfriend has no choice =P, and I feel fine) and all these really well designed tools for free, so I question what can I do for the guys that have worked so hard to make it happen?

There are some roads I can take, and so far I have chosen just two of them: translation and marketing. I am damn good at the first one, as for the second one let’s say I’m not really bright but still it’s a good thing to share points of view with the rest of the team.

Most of us contribute for the joy of it. In most cases no money behind. What’s really behind our work is a lot of feedback, our time, and the will to make our resources better day after day. Each one of us in the open source community is good (to say the least) because we are here with specific interests and do the best we can. We are not to make money, we are to make the best piece of software in the world and for today I have not heard anyone to prove me wrong on that.

I am a proud linux user and I am in this for the love of it. There is nothing compared to sharing my knowledge, which will ever be there so I ain’t affaid of someone taking it away. Like Pedro said, if one day I have the chance to work for an open source compay, that would great! but the road might be long, you never know.

The Linux philosophy is ‘Laugh in the face of danger’. Oops. Wrong One. ‘Do it yourself’. Yes, that’s it.

Why do they keep using MS messenger?

It’s like ridiculous. I have seen alot of people still using that m$ messenger, full of anoying advertisement, viruses, stupid emoticons and sounds, and an email inbox that saves all kind of spam (ain’t the live emails spam?), it seems in ten year things have ot changed at all, but at least the question “do you have msn” is fading away, or I just care less.

Nowadays we have fabulous Google Talk (some great phones like Blackberry can run it), great Pidgin, and the clone aMSN that is so much like the m$ messenger, and even Kopete has been running natively under Windowns…but no, they have to have it.

So I hope next time you need an IM, think it twice and take a look around, you do have choice!.

Duke Nukem y revista puntonet

Filed under: Society, Software development — Tags: — ricardovs @ 12:33 am
