Filed under: Open source, openSUSE — ricardovs @ 12:27 am

If you have not already heard, the new openSUSE will be out by November 12th, if plans do not change. What’s so exciting about it? That is the second version of openSUSE I collaborate, in both translation and marketing.  And now, what is ahead?

  • Oct 15th -> openSUSE RC1 (TOMORROW!).
  • Oct 29th -> openSUSE RC2.
  • Nov 12th ->openSUSE 11.2 RELEASE!!! :)

Also, if you didn’t know, KDE will be the default Desktop Environment for the 11.2 release.

See you at Encuentro Linux 2009

Filed under: Chile, Events, GNOME, Open source, Society, openSUSE — ricardovs @ 4:44 am

Yes, my talk over SUSE Studio got accepted for the 10th Encuentro Linux, which will be held in Valparaiso-Viña del Mar for this year(October 22-24). I’m damn happy about that.

What I plan to do is showing an overall (and hopefully deeper as well) view of the SUSE Studio Platform, how it works and how useful it is for building a given software appliance. Yes, it works for virtual appliances too but I have no experience at it :) . Of course I have a few openSUSE 11.1 DVDs to give away so no worries there.

So if you are around and feel like meeting us and discovering what Linux is about, don’t think it twice as there will be plenty of interesting talks covering topics such as Jails, Bacula, Contributing to Open Source, WebKitGTK+, Ubuntu behind the Scenes, Evolution of Linux Filesystems, Developing Gnome Applications, and much more! Remember, on Saturday it’s the Gnome Day ;)

Need more information? check out here.

openSUSE Day (Chile) on June 18th, 2009.

Filed under: Events, Open source, Society, openSUSE — ricardovs @ 8:18 pm

We are hoping to have students, young people, professors, teachers, and professionals from many fields as well. Actually everyone is welcome to attend the event. We’ll have presentations, stands, gaming, and of course the fun install fest (openSUSE 11.1). And yes, you can have an original openSUSE 11.1 Live DVD if you are one of the first 400 people to get there ;) (Thanks Zonker!).

Where? Meet us at Universidad Andres Bello (UNAB), Campus República, República 239/Subterráneo R3. Check the map here.

Time? 10 AM though 8 PM.

Talks:

  • Rafael de la Horra, from UNAB: Education for Professionals and the Free Software Environment.
  • Enrique Herrera, from Linux Latin America: GNU/Linux, 10 years of progress.
  • Myself, openSUSE Ambassador: SUSE Studio.
  • Patricia Albornoz, SUN Campus Ambassador: Netbeans and openSUSE.
  • Francisco del Castillo, from the Air Force: Linux and the Air Force.
  • Rodrigo Romo, from IBM/Tallard: Reducing Costs with IBM and Linux.

See you there. Join openSUSE and have a lot of fun!

Gtranslator in openSUSE 11.1

Filed under: GNOME, Open source, openSUSE — ricardovs @ 7:41 pm

You can install kbabel under Gnome still, but I just wanted to use gtranslator for the first time.
First thing to do is logging as root. Then install the following packages:

  • gconf2-devel
  • gtkspell-devel
  • gtksourceview18-devel
  • gtk2-devel
  • glib2-devel
  • libsoup-devel
  • gucharmap-devel
  • libglade2-devel
  • gdl-devel
  • db43-devel
  • make
  • gcc
  • gnome-common
  • autoconf
  • automake
  • libtool
  • intltool
  • gtk-doc
  • gnome-doc-utils-devel
  • libgtksourceviewmm-2_0-devel
  • libdb-4_5-devel

I take for granted you already have installed the subversion package. If you don’t have it, now is a good time to get it. (zypper in subversion).

Now you can create a new folder where you can download gtranslator’s source. I decided to create the new folder in /home/ricardo/gtranslator. Then run a terminal session, go to the just created folder and type:

svn co http://svn.gnome.org/svn/gtranslator/trunk gtranslator

Now we are ready to compile and install gtranslator, so we need to type:

  • cd gtranslator
  • ./autogen.sh
  • make
  • make install

And gtranslator should be in the directory /usr/local/bin. Off to contribute! =)

Qt 4.5 to be LGPL

Filed under: KDE, Open source, Software development — ricardovs @ 5:44 pm

Good news for KDE users, Qt developers, and the open source community in general. As stated by Nokia, Qt cross-platform User Interface (UI) and application framework for desktop and embedded platforms will be available under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL) version 2.1 license from the release of Qt 4.5, scheduled for March 2009. Read more about it here.

Talk at INACAP La Serena

Filed under: Events, GNOME, Open source, Software development — Tags: , , — ricardovs @ 11:17 pm

It went down very good, I spoke a whole different speech from what I had prepared because I didn’t know the folk of SUN would also speak about Netbeans a few and the mobile plataform, but anyways I felt pretty damn well. First time and willing to be out there just for the love of open source software, which has already changed my life in a way.

Thanks INACAP for the chance, and more news from me soon. Goodbye.

NetBeans over GNOME

Filed under: GNOME, Open source, Software development — Tags: , — ricardovs @ 4:34 pm

This monday (29/09/08) I will be giving a talk about NetBeans over GNOME at INACAP campus La Serena. Before me there is a SUN talk, I don’t know the topic though.

I have planned a 30-45 minutes talk about developing java applications over the GNOME Desktop, by the end of it a simple java application will be shown. Of course there will be an intro to the GNOME Desktop so if you like open source tech and feel like attending, come on over!. It starts at 19 hrs.

Sadly I don’t have any Netbeans DVD to give away (nor any other stuff) but my knowledge =)

See you all there.

My daughter

Filed under: Open source — Tags: — ricardovs @ 12:18 pm

Antonia went to the doctor yesterday (well, my gf took her…) and she is 76000 gr. in weight and her height is 66 cm, all good. She is just beautiful and can tell she’ll be a smart one (not only if we all pull together as a team).

Check her latest pictures at my picasa album.
